A Culture of Appreciation

Summary

Boost employee engagement with a culture of appreciation all year long. Learn how to recognize and show gratitude for your team's hard work.

November is filled with falling leaves, football, and a focus on gratitude as we enter a season of thanks. When appreciation is part of your company culture across ALL seasons, employee engagement increases.

One of my favorite quotes is: “A person who feels appreciated will always do more than expected.” (Unknown author) In today’s world, people want to be recognized for their contributions and know they are making an impact.

How do you recognize and show appreciation for your team? It starts with having a recognition plan. For example, at an organizational level, consider WHAT are key moments that matter to recognize, such as work anniversaries, promotions, transfers, or community initiatives.

At a team level, consider other moments such as meeting a critical deadline, member spotlight, birthdays, or family additions.

Then determine HOW you will recognize these moments, such as in a team meeting, appreciation lunch/happy hour, email distribution, or card.

Simple acts of appreciation to recognize another person create a positive impact and connection. And, the simplest act of all (no budget needed) is saying “Thank You”.

Being thoughtful about acts of appreciation helps you focus on other’s successes and be a more authentic, engaging leader.
